Future plans towards 2022

The port to double in size

The expansion of the port, which began in 1998, will be staggered over approx. 25 years. When the expansion is complete, the port area will be increased to double its present size and will cover 360 hectares. The annual cargo-handling capacity is expected to increase to approx. 20 million tonnes. The projected maximum water depth will be 15.5 metres along the quays as compared to 13.5 metres earlier. The cost of the building of the new harbour is estimated to exceed two billion Danish kroner.

First stage of the port's extension plan was a new container terminal in the Eastern harbour with 500 m quay and approx. 250,000 sq.m. terminal area which was inagurated in April 2001 by APM Terminals. Along the new quay the water depth is 14 metres allowing the world's largest container vessels to call. Second phase of the port's extension plan with an extra 800 m quay and approx. 300,000 sq. m. terminal and service area began in February 2005 and on 1st September 2007 the terminal operator Cargo Service inagurated its new container terminal.

Port of Aarhus is ready to start the last part of the harbour’s extension plan described in the revised Masterplan from 1997. This plan included further extension in the eastern part of the harbour.

Extension of the Multi Terminal

This last extension is now on the way. It is a continuation of the Multi Terminal north east of the Oil Harbour. The plan includes an extension of the harbour area near Kystvaernsvej and the western breakwater at the Oil Harbour and also dredging to 14 m water depth along the new quay. See red markeing below.

The Omni Terminal

The new harbour area is planned to be approx. 80,000 sq,m. and the title is Omni Terminal. This new area shall be used for storage of different types of cargo, which does not need to be kept under roof such as pebbles, stones and different types of bulk goods or wind mill projects waiting for shipment. In order to meet the customer’s requirements for flexibility there will not be any buildings etc. on the terminal area.
